Thursday, August 23rd marked the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. The halls teemed with excitement as new and returning students navigated their way to the heart of the “square”. After exchanging hugs & hellos, choosing lockers, and finding a seat in the gym bleachers, students were addressed by high school principal Sue Hoffenbacher. Mrs. Hoffenbacher introduced new faculty and welcomed students to SCS, acquainting everyone with the changes that always accompany every school year. Mrs. Ruffin (Director of Student Activities) and Mr. Hammers (Dean of Students) followed, speaking to students about the honor code. Honor, Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility are the core values presented in the code and will guide and define the high school. The code is meant to be an agreement that reflects a commitment by all members of the SCS high school community to abide by and embody the qualities that God values and expects of believers. Following the explanation of the honor code, students enjoyed the annual ice breaker game. This year’s game was a hybrid of musical chairs and basketball and was nothing short of entertaining. The winner of the game, Blake Washington, is new to SCS this year and not only received a warm reception from the crowd, but also an iTunes gift card.
Building on the momentum of the morning’s activities students headed to chapel for an awesome worship service and a passionate challenge from EJ Swanson (Chaplain). The day wrapped with class meetings as each class plotted and planned for Friday’s highly anticipated day of competition. Now a much loved tradition the second day of school is set aside for community and competition, giving students and faculty the opportunity to forge bonds and build relationships while serving as a preview for October’s Spirit Week and Homecoming activities. Students filed off the buses at Pebble Creek, grade by grade, dressed in matching headbands, bandanas, and t-shirts, ready for the games to begin. Classes faced off in games that tested their agility and teamwork: Matball, Quickstep, Handball, and Extreme Volleyball. In addition to having fun, students fellowshipped over lunch and freeze pops. When the day came to a close the winner was finally announced: the Class of 2013!
