SCS Middle School students playing soccer
The fall sports season has ended for the middle school, and it has been a memorable one. The cross-country team was coached by Mrs. Elizabeth Foote, former middle school science teacher. There were five runners on the team, three girls and two boys. The team competed in seven meets, and the key word was improvement. Some of the runners took minutes off their times during the season, not just seconds.
Another middle school fall sport was volleyball. Over thirty girls showed up for tryouts. There were two teams, one composed of seventh and eighth graders and the other of sixth and seventh graders. It is likely that next year there will be three teams, one for each middle school grade.
The seventh and eighth grade team was coached by Mrs. Rebecca Paryaski, a school parent. The team competed in twelve matches during the season. Skill development and participation were major goals for the team. Although they did not have a winning season, they were winners in attitude and sportsmanship. Coach Paryaski had nothing but praise for the team because of their positive attitudes and their mutual encouragement for one another. They finished the season on the upswing winning their last set.
The sixth and seventh grade team was coached by Mrs. Jacky Weidman, another school parent. They had a very rewarding season, winning eight matches and losing only four. Coach Weidman had a scrappy team. The players worked hard throughout the season, and improvement was very noticeable.
Soccer was the third sport of the fall season. Coached by Mr. John Weidman, a former high school science teacher at SCS, the soccer team finished the season with four wins, four losses, and two ties. There were twenty-three players on the team; five girls and eighteen boys. Coach Weidman describes them as “an exciting bunch of guys and girls.” As the season progressed, the team improved. Coach Weidman emphasized being in the right place at the right time, and he was gratified to see the team apply what he taught.
Altogether, it was an exciting fall season, and now it’s on to girls and boys basketball and cheer leading in the winter.
