Summary of Employment Benefits

The following information is designed to provide an overview of the benefits available to full-time teachers and administrative staff members (subsequently referred to as “employee). This information is not intended to be a complete description of each benefit. Specific details about each benefit can be obtained through the school's Business Manager.

Health Insurance: SCS provides health care insurance coverage for those employees who are the primary provider in their family. If an employee's spouse is the primary provide, the employee would be required to remain under the spouse's plan. If coverage under the spouse's plan requires that additional premiums be paid to cover the employee, SCS will reimburse the employee up to $2,500 per year to cover all or a portion of this cost.

Three options in health insurance coverage are available to employees, a Blue Cross/Blue Shield traditional plan, a Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO plan, and a Blue Care Network HMO plan. Since the cost and coverage benefits of the three plans vary, a portion (about 15%) of the BC/BS traditional and PPO plan costs are shared with the employee through payroll deductions. There is no cost to the employee for the BCN plan unless the employee selects a family continuation rider for college students.

Prescription Coverage: SCS provides employees (who qualify for the health care insurance benefit) prescription coverage through a program administered by the Kroger Company. There is no cost to the employee for this program except for possible co-pays. For most prescriptions (generic drugs) there is no co-pay. Co-pays of $5.00, 20.00, and $30.00 would be required for generic drugs, brand-name drugs, and non-formulary drugs, respectively. Terms of the program encourage employees to use Kroger pharmacies when they live within a five-mile radius of a Kroger store.

Dental: An agreement has been made with a neighborhood dentist to provide discounted pricing on dental services. In addition, SCS will reimbursement 50% of dental costs up to a maximum of $500 per school year.

Optical: No optical benefits are currently provided by SCS.

Life Insurance: Term life insurance is provided for each full-time employee equal to the employee's annual salary.

Long-Term Disability : Long-term disability benefits are provided for employees after one year of service. Benefit provides for payment of 60% of salary at the time of disability.

Paid Personal Days: Employees are allowed two paid personal days each year. These days, however, cannot be used before or after a holiday, on the first or last day of school, or to lengthen a vacation or school break. Personal days cannot be accumulated nor rolled over to another school year.

Paid Sick Days: Employees are provided ten paid sick-days per school year. Sick days may be used for the sickness of the employee or members of the employee's immediate family. These days cannot be used for personal business, early retirement, or vacation. Unused sick days can accumulate up to sixty and rolled over to the next school year.

Tuition Assistance: The school will reimburse employees for 50% of the cost of out-of-pocket expenses for graduate school tuition. Reimbursement is made to the employee upon completion of the course work and submission of the grade card and proof of payment. Course work, however, must be pre-approved by the principal and/or administrator.

Retirement: SCS contributes 6% of an employee's annual salary to a retirement plan administered through TIAA/CREF. Employees become eligible for this benefit after they have completed two full years of service. Employees may also elect to contribute additional amounts to the plan through pre-tax payroll deductions.

Section 125 Plan: SCS provides an IRS approved Section 125 cafeteria plan that allows all employees the ability to pay some healthcare and dependent care costs with pre-tax payroll dollars.

Tax Sheltered Annuities: A number of tax-sheltered annuities are available to all employees. Contributions can be made through automatic payroll deductions.

Tuition Discounts: A discount on tuition is offered to all employees who have school-aged children enrolled at SCS. Employees receive a 75% discount off the member (if a member of Highland Park Baptist Church ) or the non-member tuition rate, whichever applies.

Credit Union Membership: Employees of SCS are eligible for membership in the Michigan First, a credit union for teachers. Membership requires a $10 application fee, but provides loan rates at rates lower than most bank rates. Interest bearing checking accounts are also available.

Endowment Fund: SCS has a separate endowment fund whose primary purpose is to supplement employee salaries. Although not a guaranteed benefit, the endowment fund has paid an annual bonus of 1% to 3% of each employee's annual salary.
