Spring Hill Comes to Southfield!

springhill-header

This summer, HPBC is partnering with SpringHill Camps to offer an exciting week long day camp experience for kids in our community.  SpringHill will be bringing their awesome activities and kid-friendly staff right here to our campus.

We highly recommend SpringHill Camps!  They are able to share the love of Christ in innovative, fun and relevant ways.  I’m confident that your kids will have a blast and at the same time grow deeper in their relationship with God.

We’d like for you to consider doing three things:

1)     Send your kids to the day camp program this summer at HPBC.  We believe that the Bible based, engaging, and fun activities can play an integral role in your child’s spiritual journey.

2)    Invite your unchurched friends and families.  This is a great way to reach the lost in our city and get them connected to our family. The teaching is presented in a way that makes it engaging and challenging for those outside the church as well.  If you are interested in helping spread the word to your friends and neighbors outside the church, please contact us for more information.  Additional copies of the included flyer will be available at the church and school offices.

3)    Volunteer your time to help make this camp happen.  We need additional volunteer help at different times throughout the week in order to make camp run smoothly.  Whether you can volunteer for a few hours or all day, you can play a role in making this camp happen.

Camp runs from 9:00am-4:00pm, August 12th – 16th and is open to all kids in kindergarten to 4th grade.

Registration, scholarship, and additional information can be found on the SpringHill websites ( http://springhillcamps.com/mi/daycamp/southfield2.aspx)

For additional information, contact Brad McCarthy at bmccarthy@highlandparkbaptist.com or EJ Swanson at eswanson@southfieldchristian.com.

Hope to see your kids here this summer!

Eagle Excellence: Student Highlight

EE

“A quarter cup of kindness, a dazzle of courage, a speckle of truth and honesty, blended tastefully with modesty and wisdom, is the  significant difference between a good teacher and a thoughtful educator [who]changed my life forever,” wrote eighth grader Michelle C. about former SCS art teacher Andrea Townsend.

Her essay on “My Personal Michigan Hero” along with the essays of two other students from Southfield Christian School have been named local winners in the 44th annual America & Me Essay Contest, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Several thousand eighth grade students from nearly 450 Michigan schools participated in the contest.

The three students, who earned the first, second, and third place awards for our school are eighth graders Michelle C., first; Maya L., second; and Emma P., third. All three received award certificates for their achievement.

“Writing the essay just flowed naturally because I’ve been thinking about writing about her for a long time. I’ve been thinking about [Mrs. Townsend] as a hero a long time,” Michelle said.

Second place winner Maya chose to write about her dad, an inspector for the Detroit Police Department, because ever since she was little he was an inspiration. She writes, “Bravery, courage, aptitude, power, comfort and liveliness all go together when describing my dad.” In her essay, Maya thanks her dad for his courage to face each day positively and for pushing her to be the best she can be.

Emma focuses on her Christian grandparents who were both handicapped since childhood. “You could say that my grandma Sandra and my grandpa Craig are pretty much the same person… my grandma acts as the eyes and my grandpa acts as the legs,” she wrote. “My grandparents are heroes they don’t let anything that happened to them knock them down.”

All three essay writers were honored during the middle school awards ceremony for their accomplishment this month. As the school’s first place winner, Michelle’s name will be engraved on a plaque for permanent display in the school. Her first place essay now advances to the state level competition from which the top ten essays in Michigan will be selected.

Back to Back State Champs!

The boys basketball team won the 2013 MHSAA Class “D” State Title, successfully defending their 2012 title. The Eagles finished the season with an overall 23-4 record by winning their final 20 games after starting the season with one of the toughest non-league schedules in the state. Second year head coach Josh Baker and his assistants, John White, Dave Hart, and Clennie Brundidge, have pushed the Eagles into a basketball power by going 48-6 over the past two seasons besides winning two state titles.

This year’s team was led by first team all-state, sophomore point guard Bakari E. who averaged over 20 points per game this season. Junior Lindsey H. IV also earned all-state special mention this season while junior Damarco W. and freshman Marlo B. earned all-conference honors. This young team will return a majority of its players next season already placing them as the favorite for another title run next March.

Renewed ART by Andrea

photo
Recently, our former art teacher, Andrea Townsend, (who suffered a stroke a few years ago) was moved down to Lexington, Kentucky, to be closer to her daughters. Andrea still suffers from paralysis of her right side and an inability to speak. However, one of the huge blessings over the past half year has been the resurrection of Andrea’s art. She has started to draw again with her left hand using pencils, pastels, and markers. She has created small portraits of faces and also has been drawing cats, flowers, and landscapes. Seeing the drawings is an interesting window into her mind—they are quite flowing and expressive. It has been heartwarming to see her sketch book fill with drawings. You can tell that her drawing is bringing her joy! Andrea’s daughter Alana Gillett (Class of 2000) has opened up an online Society6 shop called “Renewed ART by Andrea” that features some of Andrea’s current and pre-stroke artwork. Society6 shops offer a variety of high-quality products that can be made into many different products such as stationery, pillows, iPhone cases, and tote bags. We would love for you to stop by and share this with your friends!

A Note to Families from the School Board

The following note was sent home to all current SCS families. In case you missed it, please see below to hear from our School Board President, Rick Warren). . .

SCS Families-

I would like to inform you that Dr. Margie Baldwin is no longer serving as superintendent of Southfield Christian School. We appreciate Dr. Baldwin for her five years of service and pray that God continues to guide and direct her future endeavors. In the interim, Dr. Ken Hall and I have agreed to help navigate the journey forward as an organization as well as assist in the search for a new superintendent.

Rest assured that our heart’s desire is and always will be nurturing the well being of our students. The mission of Southfield Christian remains focused on developing today’s learners, tomorrow’s leaders, and students who are forever lovers of Christ.

As a body of believers we are committed to honoring Christ and each other during this process and encourage anyone that has further questions to contact me or a school administrator to discuss this matter.

Sincerely,

Rick Warren

Southfield Christian School Board President
