Modern ceramics goes well beyond the use of clay for utilitarian purposes. While clay has been trapped for centuries in a role that saw its value primarily as a domestic accessory, ceramics in the last 100 years has come into its own as a mature, art-making medium. Ceramics at SCS explores its history but focuses more on contemporary, sculptural uses of clay. Students learn to form, combine and shape clay in numerous ways as well as the basics of glazing and kiln firing. This is a great class for creative students who want artistic experiences other than those possible with paper or canvas.
