In recent years, 95 to 100 percent of graduating seniors gained college admission, with four-year scholarships totaling more than $1 million per class of 70 students. Numerous students have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. SCS students perform well on standardized tests too. For example, 93 percent of all seventh through ninth graders scored at grade level or above when compared to the national sample of students participating in a national testing program. In one representative graduating class, 80 percent of our students participating in the Advanced Placement Examinations were eligible to earn college credit for their efforts. Two-thirds of the graduating class qualified for the Michigan Competitive Scholarship; and while the national average on the ACT was 21, SCS students averaged 25.
Coaches and physical education teachers strive to provide students with a variety of physical skills to encourage a Christian view of the body to train students to be physically fit, and to provide students with a knowledge of physiology and general health care. Many of our students participate in after-school programs and some attend summer training camps.
In recent years, varsity teams have distinguished themselves on both the district and regional levels, capturing numerous MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) titles in baseball, softball, volleyball, and track & field. Results from a representative year indicate that SCS varsity teams won seven out of eleven league championships. An outstanding golf program has produced repeated league and Southfield City championships, and the cross-country and soccer teams have earned state championships. Basketball rounds out a rich tradition of commitment to athletics.
Accomplished faculty members assist students in appreciating, experiencing and creating beauty through exposure to and instruction in music and art. Vocal and instrumental students routinely earn high honors at District Solo and Ensemble Festivals, and a number qualify for All State Band and Chorus. Advanced students of the visual arts are encouraged to take Independent Study units in art and pursue personal goals including portfolio preparation for the Advanced Placement Studio Art program. Visual art students also receive training in cutting edge computer arts including digital photo manipulation and 3D modeling.
Additionally the annual school play provides a creative outlet and learning experience for those interested in the dramatic arts.
