Math 6 - Mrs. Christie

Southfield Christian Middle School
Math Syllabus – 6th Grade
Mrs. Christie

Course: 6th Grade Math

Text: Math Advantage Middle School
Publisher: Harcourt Brace

Materials needed for class: Textbook, Math binder with dividers, red pens, pencils, colored pencils, loose-leaf paper, Assignment Notebook, graph paper, compass, protractor, ruler, scientific calculator

Course Content
Students will review, develop, and master the following Math concepts through daily instruction, homework, and assessment: using whole numbers, decimals, and fractions with the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; estimation; problem solving; measurement and geometry; statistics, graphing, and probability; algebraic equations; ratios, proportions, and percents; and operations with integers

Preparation for class
Students will be expected to bring their Math book, Math binder, Assignment Notebook, and Math tools to class every day. Homework assignments should be taken out and be ready to be corrected at the beginning of Math class. All assignments should be completed in pencil only. Red pen should be used for correcting assignments. Assignments completed in pen will not be accepted and will need to be redone.

Class Behavior
Students will:
*Be respectful to teacher, property, and to classmates.
*Be prepared for class – all materials and homework ready when
bell rings and seated at desk.
*Listen carefully and follow directions.
*Work quietly during work time.
Please see the Middle School Handbook for school behavior expectations and consequences.

Late Assignments
Students are expected to turn assignments in on time. Assignments that are incomplete will be considered to be late. 10% will be deducted from the score for each day an assignment is late. Students are responsible for correcting late assignments before or after school, or during non-instructional class time.

Redo Assignments
Students may redo any daily math assignment or chapter review and receive full credit for the new score. Late assignments that are redone will have the same percentage taken off the redo as the original assignment. The redo should be done on lined loose-leaf paper with a full heading and stapled on top of the original assignment. Students should correct the redo following the directions posted in the classroom. All redo assignments must be turned in by one week before the end of the quarter.

Tests
Students are expected to prepare for tests by making sure they are current with all assignments, reviewing concepts in the chapter being tested, and asking for help before the day of the test. Tests may be retaken once. If a student would like to retake a test, he or she must get a Retake Form from me and schedule to retake the test within one week of the original test. The Retake Form requires the student to obtain the signature of Mr. Droste and a parent before the test may be retaken. The original test should be turned in when the Retake Form is requested.

Grading
The Math grade will be based on homework, quizzes, tests, and occasional binder checks. All corrected and returned assignments, quizzes, and tests should be filed in chronological order in the proper tabs of the Math Binder until the students are given instruction by the teacher to remove the papers. The weighting for the Math grade is:
Homework/chapter reviews/binder checks 35%
Tests 65%
All assignments are expected to have the proper heading in the left hand corner of the assignment and will have points deducted as follows:
Name (first and last) and class subject/period -5pts
Assignment (page # and problems) -1pt
Date -1pt
“No name” papers are put in a tray in the classroom and should be checked by students whose online grades show missing assignments.
Grades are posted online on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 9:00 am.

Extra Credit
There will be no extra credit in Math.

Absences
Assignments will be posted online at the end of the day. Parents may call the office during the day to pick up any worksheets at the end of the day. Students are given one day for each day absent to make up the absent work. Students who miss Math class but come in for part of the day are expected to get the assignment at the end of that day. Students who are absent the day of a test are expected to make up the test the day they return.

Time Drills
Students will not be given time drills in 6th grade Math. However, I suggest using flash cards to practice the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts to help each student be successful on computation assignments. There will be short daily warm-up with basic computation and problem-solving skills to review math concepts.

Calculators
Basic four-function calculators may be used to check work when an assignment is completed, or for assignments I have given instruction to use the calculator for computation. All work must be shown to receive credit for assignments unless students have been instructed otherwise and indicated on the assignment.

Homework
Homework is not assigned on Wednesday to respect the activities of HPBC on Wednesday evening. However, students will have assignments on Wednesday and will be given time to complete them in class. Students who do not use their time wisely in class may have problems to complete that are due on Thursday.
Assignments are written in the Assignment Notebook, posted online, and posted in the hall outside the classroom every day.

Help
I am available in the morning from 7:30-8:00 Monday - Wednesday and Friday, and after school Tuesday – Thursday for students who have questions about Math.

I can be reached by phone through the Middle School office (248-357-3660) or by e-mail at jchristie@southfieldchristian.org. Mrs. Christie
