Math 8 (PreAlgebra) - Mrs. Potter

Pre-Algebra combines a review of basic arithmetic skills with an introduction of algebraic skills needed to prepare for the high school course Algebra I. There is also a significant emphasis throughout the year on the development of problem solving skills. The properties and operations of whole numbers are reviewed as well as immediately introducing the concepts of integers, variables, and equations. The traditional study of decimals and fractions is expanded using the idea of positives and negatives. Ratios, proportions, and percents are explored in various applications. While equation solving is integrated throughout the course, solving more difficult equations receives special attention. Linear equations and inequalities are graphed, and the concepts of slope and intercept are introduced in preparation for Algebra I. An introduction to a variety of topics such as square roots, the Pythagorean Theorem, the distance and midpoint formulas, arithmetic and geometric sequences, and nonlinear functions is also provided. The use of scientific calculators, like the TI-34II, is emphasized throughout the year.
