Course Content: Scientific classification; Invertebrates and Vertebrates; Ecosystems; Ecology; Earth’s Oceans; Matter and Energy; Sound and Light; Forces and Motion

Preparation for Class
Students will be expected to bring their Science book, Science binder, Assignment Notebook, red pen, and pencils to class every day. All assignments should be completed in pencil and corrected with red pen. Study notes may be completed in blue or black pen,
but should not have mistakes “crossed out” with the pen. Correction tape may be used to cover mistakes on study notes. Neatness is expected on all assignments. Cursive or
printing is acceptable.

Class Behavior
Students should come to Science class ready to learn by following the following rules:
*Be respectful to teacher, property, and to classmates.
*Be prepared for class - all materials and homework
ready when bell rings and seated at desk.
*Listen carefully and follow directions
*Work quietly during class work time.
Science lab safety rules and directions are very important and should always be followed students who do not cooperate will be asked to be “observers” during lab and will receive 0% for that lab.

Late Assignments
All assignments should be turned in on time, at the beginning of class. Assignments that are incomplete will be considered to be late. The first day an assignment is late, 15% will be deducted from the score, and the second day 30% will be deducted. After two days late, no credit will be given. Students are responsible for correcting late assignments before or after school, not during class time.

Grading
The Science grade will be based on homework, quizzes (open book and “pop” quizzes on assigned reading), tests, and occasional binder checks. All corrected and returned assignments, quizzes, and tests should be filed in chronological order in the proper tabs of the Science binder until the students are given instruction by the teacher to remove the papers. The weighting for the Science grade is:
Homework/labs – 30%
Quizzes/binder checks – 30%
Tests / Projects – 40%
All assignments are expected to have the proper heading in the left hand corner of the top margin
and will have points deducted as follows:
Name (first/last) and class subject/period -5 pts
Assignment (page # and questions) -1 pt
Date -1 pt
“No name” papers are put in a tray in the classroom and should be checked by students whose online grades show missing assignments.

Projects
There will be projects assigned each quarter relating to the concepts taught in that quarter. Project information will be sent home with students with ample time to complete them on time.

Absences
Assignments will be posted online at the end of the day. Parents may call the office during the day of an absence and request homework to be picked up at the end of the day. Students are
given one day for each day absent to make up the absent work. Students who miss Science class but come in for part of the day are expected to get the missed assignment at the end of that day.
Students who are absent the day of a test are expected to make up the test the day they return.

Homework
Homework is not assigned on Wednesday to respect the activities of HPBC on Wednesday evening. However, students will have assignments on Wednesday and will be given time in class to complete them. Students who do not use their time wisely in class may have assignments to complete that are due on Thursday.

Field Trips
Field trips that reinforce and enhance the science curriculum may be taken this year. You will be notified and asked to sign a permission slip for any field trips.
