Questions & Applications from your Bible Reading

Assigned on: August 26, 2008
Due Date: December 8, 2008

Assignment:

For every book of the New Testament you will have a homework assignment. It will be a combination of questions you have while reading each book (including the Scripture reference) and an application you determine. The homework will be due the same day as the reading for that book(s).

Point Value for the homework…
• Questions = 2 points each
• Applications = 2 points each

Example:
• Mark - 5 questions = 10 pts. & 1 application = 2 pts., total = 12 pts.

Late Homework…
• All homework is due at the beginning of class or it will be considered late. To be totally clear, work turned in at the end of the hour or day will be deemed late. Late homework will be assessed a 50% point deduction. Also, late homework must be turned in by the Friday of the week it is due, no exceptions.

One Grace Make Up…
• Students will be able to make up one homework per quarter with no lose of points (View this one make up as a “pay-later” plan).

Questions…

The main reason for the questions is to (1) force you to interact with the text and (2) help keep you honest in you reading (it’s hard to ask a good question if you haven’t read the book).

• All questions must have a Scripture reference accompanying them.

Examples of Good Questions…
• Why does Matthew record that Jesus heals two demon possessed men when Mark only records one? (Matt. 8:28-34)
• Why did Jesus change the water into wine when it appears that he didn’t want to? (John 2:4)
• Does Paul encouraging drinking wine in I Timothy 5:23?
• In relation to swearing, who defines what “unwholesome talk, obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse joking” is in Eph. 4:29 – 5:3, is there are list somewhere or is it cultural or something else?

Example of Bad Questions…
• Who were Jesus’ disciples? (Too simple and no reference)
• What does Romans 1:20 mean? (Too general, needs to be more specific)
• Why is Philemon only 1 chapter long? (Not a question from the text)
• What is the exact date the Jesus will return? (No possible answer)

Simply Stated: While you’re reading, if you have a generally good question about something, write it down along with the Scripture reference.

Applications…

The main idea with the applications is to get you to apply something that you read in the book to the Christian life. The application doesn’t have to be personal, although it can be. What it needs to be is a Biblical truth or principle that aids or encourages or strengthens believers toward a fuller relationship with Christ.

• All applications must have a Scripture reference accompanying them.

To receive full credit, please make sure that applications are specific and not some sappy Christian statement.

Bad Example: In Philippians 4:13 it tell us “that we can do all things through Christ,” now we can take on the world for Jesus!

Good Example: Mark 1:35 – Jesus got up very early while it was still dark to pray. I should follow the example set by Jesus to place prayer at the beginning of my day even if it costs me some
sleep. My relationship with God must come first and I must seek Him each morning to live that day for Him.
