This year’s Athletic Hall of Honor induction was the 2001 MHSAA Division IV Boys State Soccer Championship team.  The 2001 team went 16-5-3 defeating Muskegon Western Michigan Christian 2-1 in the MHSAA Division 4 title game.  The team built an early 2-0 lead in the championship game on goals by Jeremy Atkins and Aaron Bauer that allowed them to hold on for the victory to give the Eagles their first soccer state title.  The 2001 season was the final season for 2008 hall of honor inductee, Coach Scott Berthel who won 139 games in 13 seasons roaming the Eagle sideline before walking off the field as a state champion in his final game.  At this past weekend’s halftime induction ceremony the team was represented on the field by team members Jeremy Atkins, Matt Coughenour and Brad Marshall.  Congratulations to the 2001 Boys State Championship Team on their hall of honor induction.

    • Peter Ward - Voice of the Eagles
This year’s Hall of Honor Class featured one of the finest all round athletes in Southfield Christian history and also one of the staples behind the scenes supporting Eagles Athletics.  First, Tim Bergsma from the class of 2008.  Bergsma earned 14 varsity letters at Southfield Christian.  A four sport varsity athlete, he lettered in soccer, football, basketball, and baseball earning all conference recognition in each sport. During his tenure he helped the Eagles win seven conference titles, four district titles, and three regional titles. Bergsma played quarterback for the inaugural football team and scored the program’s first touchdown. Bergsma was twice named first team all state in both soccer and baseball and earned conference MVP for both sports. He went on to play college soccer at the University of Michigan as a goalkeeper.  While there he was a team captain, a member of the 2010 big ten tournament title team, twice named academic all big ten, and earned the 2011 big ten sportsmanship award.  Bergsma is currently in his 2nd season as the head varsity boys soccer coach at Southfield Christian and also works at Warren Strategies.

Peter Ward has served the Southfield Christian community not only as a teacher but has worked behind the scenes for over thirty five years as an announcer, scoreboard operator, statistician and wherever else there was a need.  With the support of his wife Allison who has been by his side working the score table, coaching elementary basketball and driving the team buses along with his three daughters, Andrea Class of ‘98, Christine Class of ’99 and Emily Class of 2000 the Ward family has left a lasting mark on Eagles athletics and Southfield Christian school.  Thank you Peter for being the “Voice of the Eagles” and your support and dedication.
