Prekindergarten

The Program

The Southfield Christian School Pre-K is a licensed and accredited program that offers a well-rounded, Christ-centered educational experience that seeks to develop and nurture the whole child: mind, body, heart, and spirit.   Our team of dedicated, experienced, and certified teachers and staff partner with families to foster growth and build skills across all of the critical domains of a child’s development: cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual.

The Environment

SCS Pre-K students are immersed in a warm, nurturing, safe, and sensory-rich environment that targets each child’s emotional needs and unique style of learning.  Teachers and staff make it a priority to know each student individually, to gain an understanding of their interests and gifts.  This personalized approach, along with a highly structured curriculum (phonics, reading, writing and math), guides the teacher to develop appropriate strategies that prepares every student for success in kindergarten.

The Future

The Pre-K program plays an integral role in equipping students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in our K-12 college preparatory curriculum.  Pre-K students at SCS are embarking on an educational journey, whereby each year builds upon the foundation of the previous learning year -  with the end goal in sight; pursuing excellence for the glory of God with their minds, talents, and lives.

Mind (Cognitive)

SCS Pre-K teachers craft a comprehensive curriculum that is designed to spark students’ intellectual curiosity, love for learning, and cognitive growth.   There is an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that encourages students to make connections in their English Language Arts and Math instruction as they explore Science, Social Studies and Bible.   In addition to these core subject areas, students also participate in special electives in Art, Music, Physical Education, and Technology.

Body (Physical)

SCS Pre-K teachers craft a comprehensive curriculum that is designed to spark students’ intellectual curiosity, love for learning, and cognitive growth.   There is an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that encourages students to make connections in their English Language Arts and Math instruction as they explore Science, Social Studies and Bible.   In addition to these core subject areas, students also participate in special electives in Art, Music, Physical Education, and Technology.

Heart (Social and Emotional)

SCS Pre-K students learn how to live and learn in community with one another.  Teachers support students in their learning by teaching them to honor and care for others and value the gifts, cultures and interests of their classmates. Teachers seek to help students develop important social skills such as:
  • Listening and Self-expression
  • Collaboration and Independence
  • Innovation and Adaptation
  • Sharing and Stewardship
  • Affirming self-concept
  • Service and Leadership
  • Relationship Building and Conflict Resolution

Additionally, students are taught to reflect, express, and manage their own emotions while also having empathy and consideration for the emotions of others.

Spirit (Spiritual and Moral)

SCS Pre-K teachers prioritize the spiritual formation of students, helping them develop character that honors God, themselves and others. Through prayer and kid friendly Bible stories and skits, students learn about God, His son Jesus, His creation, and His love for the world.   The program is guided by the wisdom presented in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not turn from it.”  By incorporating spiritual truths and important biblical stories into the preschool curriculum, children gain a broader understanding of God’s sovereignty and love from the onset of their educational journey.
